Amazon’s Chances To Be The Next Source of Coronaviruses

According to a Brazilian ecologist’s daring statement, the Amazon rainforest could become the next source of coronaviruses. Human intrusion into animals’ habitats – a possible reason for the coronavirus breakdown – occurs because of uncontrolled deforestation. 

Researchers, on the other hand, explained that the urbanization of initially wild regions adds to the development of zoonotic illnesses, which are passed from animals to humans. That involves the new coronavirus, which researchers think arose in bats before reaching humans in China’s quickly urbanizing Hubei region, most likely through a third species. Given this, should we worry about the Amazon? Could we witness the rise of another coronavirus?

The Amazon Rainforest Vs. People’s Harsh Actions

David Lapola is the Brazilian ecologist who released the recent statement about what could the future of Amazon hold. He realized research on how people’s harsh activity will change the ecosystems of tropical forests negatively. Another reason to be alarmed is the farmers, loggers, and miners’ illegal actions. He described the Amazon as an immense reservoir of viruses, and “we’d better not try our luck.” 

The world’s biggest rainforest is dying at an alarming rate. Last year, for instance, the Brazilian Amazon deforestation rose to 85 % to approximately 15,000 square kilometers (around the size of Lebanon). Unfortunately, such actions are continuing this year. From the beginning of 2020 until now, over 1,000 square kilometers were completely erased, setting a new record. Lapola stated: “When you create ecological disequilibrium, that’s when a virus can jump from animals to humans.” Lapola even suggested a reinforcement of the actual environmental agency, IBAMA. 

Amazon’s enormous biodiversity could turn the area into the world’s largest coronavirus “pool.” We need to find a way to revive the relationship between our society and the rainforest, as soon as possible or risk a massive disaster. Our world could also encounter more outbreaks than previously.
