Apple Tracks Down iPhones Stolen During Riots

People from the United States are protesting over the death of George Floyd. Though the protests were peaceful at first, the situation quickly degenerated as riots began.

A wave of riots has covered a significant part of some of the biggest cities in the United States.

Participants can be seen acting violently, looting, and destroying vehicles and buildings.

According to the New York Post reports, Apple was one of the affected businesses as some of its stores were looted.

Apple’s Response

Some rioters stole new Apple flagship devices, but Apple acted quickly and locked all of the stolen devices.

The stolen smartphones display messages like this:

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>APPLE DISABLED THE PHONES THAT WERE LOOTED <a href=”https://t.co/9xp1HhOAeR”>pic.twitter.com/9xp1HhOAeR</a></p>&mdash; mJ (@disposablefilms) <a href=”https://twitter.com/disposablefilms/status/1267111238313693185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>May 31, 2020</a></blockquote> https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Such messages have been displayed on stolen Apple devices for days now.

The tech giant was just beginning to reopen its doors after the coronavirus pandemic situation has started getting better.

Tim Cook’s Response

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has told his employees that the company would make donations to some particular groups while also matching employee donations.

A memo from Cook reads:

“Today, Apple is making donations to a number of groups, including the Equal Justice Initiative, a non-profit committed to challenging racial injustice, ending mass incarceration, and protecting the human rights of the most vulnerable people in American society.”

“For the month of June, and in honor of the Juneteenth holiday, we’ll also be matching two-for-one all employee donations via Benevity,” he added.

An official spokesperson from Apple declined to comment on the situations for security reasons.

Apple took the situation seriously, and it’s expected to see them contact authorities to sort out some cases. The ongoing situation looks grim, but we can hope that it will all be cleared out soon.
