ARM’s Cortex-A78 CPU and Mali-G78 GPU Will Be Integrated Into 2021’s Best Android Devices

ARM has announced its new high-end mobile concepts, the Cortex-A78 CPU, and the Mali-G78 GPU, for the 2021 flagship devices.

Usually, ARM isn’t advertised that much on the spec sheets of people’s new devices. But, it’s a significant company that offers the designs that processor makers like Huawei, Qualcomm, and Samsung utilize to develop the system-on-a-chip concepts. They create chipsets that power almost every smartphone and tablet, and now, laptops, such as Surface Pro X. Here is what you need to know.

ARM’s New Lineup of CPUs and GPUs

According to ARM, the Cortex-A78 CPU core is one of the most efficient Cortex-A CPU ever developed for smartphones. It has a 20 % growth in what ARM calls “sustained performance.” Last year’s Cortex-A77 concept featured only a 1-watt power budget. 

ARM states that the performance will enable better efficiency for demanding 5G battery drains. Furthermore, it details that the new CPU concept should be specially adapted to computationally craving foldable devices with larger and multiple displays. 

The company is introducing a next-gen Cortex-X custom program for its partners to develop their specialized Cortex CPU in collaboration with ARM for their specific plans beyond the stock CortexA-78. The first of those chipsets is the ARM Cortex-X1 that the company says will provide a 30 % high performance enhanced over the Cortex-A77. 

Qualcomm is known for using partially customized variants of the ARM’s CPUs. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, for example, used ARM Cortex-A77 and Cortex-A55 concepts for its Kryo 585 CPU. Samsung’s Exynos 990 utilizes Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 CPU cores, and a Mali-G77 GPU. 

ARM has, too, a lineup of new mobile GPUs. Mali-G78 is the upcoming GPU, said to support up to 24 cores. It will also offer a 25 % increase in graphics performance in a more affordable package. 

Lastly, the company is releasing a new Ethos-N78 NPU (neural processing unit), which should provide up to 25 % of enhanced performance efficiency.
