Google Maps’ new features encourage consumers to support local businesses. The app offers the right tools for everyone’s interested in connecting with local companies during the coronavirus pandemic.
Google Maps allows now the shops to list the special hours, like windows designated explicitly for seniors or people with a weakened immune system. The app also lets users book virtual appointments, such as writing or cooking classes, and offer price estimates.
Such changes come as local shops struggle a lot under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, restaurants and other venues have faced closures and layoffs.
Another new feature of Google Maps update allows businesses to request help from customers by linking to webpages that let people buy gift cards or make donations.
“In a world where things are changing as rapidly as they are, it’s really been important for us to think about how we respond to those changes,” explained Jennifer Fitzpatrick, the senior vice president of Google Maps.
During the coronavirus pandemic, takeout and delivery have risen. So, another feature lets restaurants indicate what options they have available, such as dine-in and curbside picking. Previously, those restaurants didn’t have that alternative.
Google has also stated that it wants to support small businesses beyond its Maps services. So, in March, the company announced an $800 million package to aid companies ailing because of the coronavirus, designating $340 million in ad credits for small and medium organizations across all categories. Only the businesses with active Google Ads will get the credits.
