Microsoft says goodbye to Cortana

Cortana was originally launched for iOS and Android devices back in December 2015 and its initial purpose was to connect PCs that ran windows 10 and mobile phones. Unfortunately, the app didn’t really rise up to Microsoft’s expectations.

Even though the app underwent a thorough redesign, Cortana still never rose to the fame of Apple’s or Google’s smart assistants.

According to Microsoft, they are planning to kill off their Cortana application for both Android and iOS in January 2020.

Microsoft announced the news via a new support article for users of Cortana in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. As of right now, it’s confirmed that users from these areas will have to say goodbye to their beloved digital assistant on January 31.

Thankfully, Cortana won’t be gone entirely, as Microsoft states that “To make your personal digital assistant as helpful as possible, we’re integrating Cortana into your Microsoft 365 productivity apps”. This is an extract from a support note released for the UK market: “As part of this evolution, on January 31st, 2020, we’re ending support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS in your market.”

US market

It’s uncertain whether the Cortana app for iOS and Android will continue to be usable in the United States or not after January 31st. Microsoft failed to provide information regarding this question on their official US site. The complete support note also shows that Cortana will be removed from the Android Launcher app of Microsoft by 1 February in the Uk, Australia and Canada.
