Tesla Launches the Model S Plaid As Its Fastest Car Yet

Tesla CEO Elon Musk showcased the Model S Plaid in an event held at a U.S. factory in Fremont, California. During the event, 25 customers received the new car which is said to be faster than any Porsche and safer than any Volvo.

The Model S Plaid doesn’t alter much in terms of exterior design but many changes have been made under the hood. According to Musk, this new model is “the fastest accelerating car ever”. The Model S Plaid is capable of going from zero to 60 miles per hour in around 2 seconds which has never been done before. The secret to this high performance is Tesla’s new tri-motor all-wheel drive platform which allows the car to reach 1020 horsepower and 390 miles of range. The Model S Plaid also has a top speed of 200mph when equipped with the right tires and wheels which release later this year.

Not only is the Plaid fast, but it also features a powerful entertainment system capable of streaming movies and playing demanding AAA video games. One of the most interesting design choices has to be the yoke steering wheel which replaces a standard circular wheel.

The Model S Plaid will be release as a halo model with high performance and low production volume. With this release Musk wants to prove that “Sustainable energy cars can be the fastest cars, be the safest cars, [and] can be the most kick-ass cars in every way”.

Musk stated that Tesla plans to manufacture several hundred Model S Plaids per week soon. He also expects the company to ramp up production to reach around 1,000 per week next quarter.

The Model S Plaid will not be cheap and will cost $129,990 after a recent $10,000 bump in price prior to the event. The Model S Plaid+ was supposed to be an upgraded variant of the standard car, however, it has since been cancelled.
