The Witcher Games Reach 50 Million Sold Copies

The Witcher video game franchise may have had a slower start at first. Still, the release of the third game in the series placed it into the spotlight as millions of gamers discovered a hidden gem and bought all the games in the trilogy to experience the complete story.

In May 2019, CD Projekt announced that more than 40 copies of the games had been sold, with the 20 million being copies of the critically-acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is not a surprise since the last part of the trilogy is also the most popular.

The Witcher franchise continues to grow

The three games are inspired by the Witcher series of short stories and novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Many played the games before reading the source novels, which also offer a thrilling experience as Geralt and Ciri face countless challenges.

Netflix released a TV series based on the books in 2019, attracting new fans that were curious about the lore behind the games and novels. While there are some major differences between the way in which the events take place in the books, games, and TV series, The Witcher became even more popular across the world.

Present across a large number of platforms

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been released across a large number of platforms, including PC, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Swich. Several gaming news outlets have stated that the Nintendo Swich version upped the ante for ports, as it managed to recreate the immersive experience of the title on hardware that is considerably less powerful due to the focus on the portability of the console.

CD Projekt has been hard at work on the development of Cyberpunk 2077, a title with great ambitions that promises a remarkable experience. After several delays, Cyberpunk 2977 will be released for the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on September 13, 2020.
