Xbox Series X Will Bring HDR and 120fps Support For Older Games

Microsoft intends to automatically add HDR support to older games on its next-gen Xbox Series X.

The company is also doing some work to enhance some games up to 120fps. Here are the latest details.

Xbox Series X’s Features Will Support More Older Games

Teaming up with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X brings a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique that automatically allows the console to add HDR support to games. Such a method is controlled by the console itself, allowing devs to enable HDR with zero impact on a game’s performance. It will also be added to Xbox 360 and original Xbox game titles, developed many years ago, before the introduction of HDR.

It’s not clear yet how Microsoft will add HDR to existing games. The company has previously done such a thing to older games such as Mirror’s Edge on the Xbox One X.

Moreover, the innovative “HDR reconstruction technique” is integrated at the console level, so it needs no work from developers. Microsoft could upscale and process games in HDR, similar to what Apple did to all non 4K content.

Microsoft’s other plans include finding a way to improve and preserve some older games that work on the Xbox Series X by increasing the framerates. As part of the Xbox platform team, Jason Ronald explained: “The compatibility team has invented brand new techniques that enable even more titles to run at higher resolutions and image quality while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators.” He also said that they’re developing new classes of innovations such as the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30fps to 60fps, and 60fps to 120fps.

All of these upgrades are part of Microsoft’s continued backward compatibility project that will allow Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games to run on the next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. The company is now planning to present some of its plans for first-party next-gen games in July.
